Two concerns. My Barred Rock Hen, LuLu, 5 months old, just started honking like a goose when it is time to go in the enclosure. She stomps around honking avoiding the door then honks and chirtles the whole time until I come out. Is honking normal? No roosters in my flock of four by the way. Three Golden Laced Wyandottes and one sassy Barred Rock. Also 3 eggs daily....2 brown and one a bit lighter brown. I believe the Barred Rock is not laying. Do they lay a bit later than most because the Wyandottes have been laying for a month now and they are the same age? These are my first girls so....I worry about EVERYTHING! The honking is new and she seems proud of it. Otherwise...very active, healthy, happy flock of four. Thanks to anyone with advice.

I take it honking is her recent deviation from the chick chirping she's been doing all along. It's usually around age four months that a young chicken begins to get their adult voice. Honking is what the first attempts often resemble, although I've had older hens "honk" when they are trying to order me around, telling me what they want me to do, such as open the door to the run so they can go out and free range.

The hen I had that honked was a tail-less EE that I had adopted after her flock was all killed by a bobcat. She had always had free ranging privileges and couldn't stand to be penned up. When I let her out she would then launch herself out of the run like a guided missile, a loudly honking guided missile.

I have a younger EE hen that issues a popping sound and sounds just like a wild turkey. The sound is similar to when you compress your lips and then suddenly release them resulting in a loud pop.

Chickens can be such comedians.
