I have four 1.5 week old barred rock "females". Three of them over the past four days have gotten long tail feathers and the whitish/grey barred feathers.... Then there is number 4 no tail feathers to speak of and nothing even starting in that area. Also the barred wings are none existent. They came from Meyers Hatchery and are in great health. Nothing wrong health wise with any of them. Just wondering about number 4... female for sure or possibility she is a he? This is the best picture i could get of the chick. Any help for this first time chick owner would be great. Thank you in advance

PS sorry they have a amber/red light in the brooder.

That's what i was thinking. Mostly just wondering. And when my 2 year old daughter (she thinks they are all hers) pointed it out to me I just started to wonder. To be truthful I would not mind one bit to have 1 male to 3 females, but don't want to get ahead of myself to quick.

I don't think the sexes feather out at a different rate in barred rocks like they do in a few other breeds. Roosters will feather out lighter, and I believe pullets have more of a dark wash on the front of the legs than male. Plus the head spots are different on chicks. I believe the females are bigger, and the males spot is smaller. Yours had a bigger head spot like a female.

Well i know they are only 4 weeks old and still possibly to young to tell the sex on to this one but.. i sure do like the barring(?) on this one. Still no tell feathers to speak of but its the only one with its coloring so plain thus far.
