This may be an obvious decision to experienced chicken raisers but clearly I am not one of them! Just need some help with this one. Boy or girl. Personality calm and friendly bigger then other hens though.

He or she is about 18 weeks maybe. It looks male but maybe I'm in denial thanks for any help or opinions!

There is a very good breeder of BR's on BYC and after many years with the breed, she admits she still has trouble sexing some. Some birds will exhibit features of both genders. The first photo I looked at - the bird showed lighter barring - grayish. I thought cockerel. The next photo shows black barring = female. If these aren't different birds, I can see that it would be confusing.

Sometimes you just can't tell until it either lays an egg or starts to crow but I am guessing cockerel. If he's well behaved, you're allowed to keep cocks in your area and you have 8-10 hens, you might want to keep him around.

Good luck to you, nice to have you here!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. With that light barring and those long pointed saddle and sickle feathers, your BR is definitely a cockerel. Sorry.( Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.
