Barred Rock rooster or pullet?

I think it has to be specifically bred for and hatchery birds aren’t being bred for that, just egg production.
That's interesting. I wonder if the girl at TSC who told me that knows that aspect of it? She raises her own birds, but mostly seramas and bantam breeds. She might not know that detail.

Several years ago someone on here had photos of Barred Rock chicks to show the head spot. On some of those chicks it was clear that the spot was either large or small. On some, it was really hard to tell. Experience can help a lot with that but with some it is still more of a clue that it might be instead of a guarantee.

Eek! So maybe it's not always accurate. 🤔
I have noticed that the chicks I get from this particular feed store often don't fit the standard. The wyandottes are single comb, not rose comb for example. But they are great people and they let me return the "accidental roosters" and we don't show the birds so it's okay.

That is really awesome that you can rerurn the males. Most places won't let you do that.
