We recently bought 5 chicks (3 barred rocks and 2 rhode island reds). As new chicken owners and residents of a city that only allows hens, we really emphasized that we needed girls! Now, at 3 or 4 or 5 weeks old (the guy was not really forthcoming with info!), each of our chicks is growing little bumps, spurs?? Does this mean we have five little roosters in the brooder?

All chicks, no matter the gender, have a spur bump, and some hens do grow spurs, so you can't tell gender from that. If you could post a full body picture we could help you out with the gender, but they may still be too young to tell :)

Roosters or Hens? Age is anywhere from 3 to 4 weeks.

1. Big Bleu (the biggest and more aggressive)

2. Fluffy

3. BocBoc and T's butt

4. Sassafras

5. T and Big Bleu

Thanks for sharing your wisdom!

So far I would say number one and number four are cockerels, and possibly T in the last picture too. The others look like pullets so far.

Okay, we're going to try to rehome the biggest possible rooster if he is indeed a he - so I'm going to post another couple pictures of it. Is this almost certainly a rooster or is it possibly a hen with a big attitude? This chick is 3 or 4 weeks; we're not quite sure.
Thanks for taking a look!

The one in question is a cockerel, and so is the one behind him in the first picture.

Crud. I think we bought three barred rock roosters. Such a bummer as they are my favorite looking chicken and supposed to be good chicken pets! Is it the redness of the comb and wattles growing so quickly that is a sure sign of a rooster?
