Barred rock

What type of chick is this? I think it could be a Barred rock but I feel that it will turn out to be a Australorp.

It would have a pale head spot if it was barred.

I don't think it's a Barred Rock (no white dot on back of the head) or an Australorp (they don't have yellow legs).

Did you get it from a hatchery?

No, I’ve incubated them myself. I have a flock of 9 hens and 1 rooster being a Rhode Island Red.

Oh I see. So you're wondering which mix it could be. It could definitely be a RIR/Plymouth Barred Rock. Hatcheries actually mix those and call them Black Stars or some other name. They're sex linked so if the Barred Rock is indeed the mother, that chick is a female. The males would be barred at birth (dot on the head).

But the thing is I don’t know if my barred rock hen is the mother because I have 9 active laying hens and my roster is a Rhode Island Red.

What breeds are your other hens?

With a RIR roo and a BR hen, pullets will not have barring (head dot), but Cockerels will. The chicks can be referred to as sex links, but they will not be true BR.

I have 1 Rhode Island Red, 2 barred rock hens, 3 australorp hens, and 3 blue jersey giants, plus my rooster named the Colonel who is also a Rhode Island Red.
