Its amazing to me how much personality some chickens have! I have a very mixed flock of 12 hens. I added two new bantams to my flock of ten, two weeks ago. I have two barred rocks who seem to share leadership? They have the control or the highest pecking order. I was worried to add chickens as to what might happen? And here is what happens if any one picks on the new ones then the barred rocks go after who ever started it. They have done this before they seem to break up any fight started by anyone else. It seems no one is allowed to fight unless its them who starts it! Does anyone else have Barred rocks who have shown this behavior? They seen to be natural peace keepers and I wonder if its a fluke or is it a barred rock thing??

Thats cool its not a fluke! My chickens are almost a year old and this is my first time raising them and have been amuzed by they way the barred rocks seem to have an issue with anyone fighting! I have 5 bantams in with 7 large breed chickens and the bantams are never picked on without the barred rocks stepping in. Well knowing that its not just mine, I am surely a barred rock fan!!

My Lexie used to break up fights between the guineas when I had those. She looked at them like they were completely disgusting aliens, LOL. Yup, some call BRs aggressive, but if it's in the natural pecking order, that is not aggression. That's just knowing and taking your place of authority in the flock. All my BRs are like that. Best birds in the world, IMO. Glad you're enjoying yours!
