I’ve been noticing a few differences among my supposed barred rock chicks. I’ve got three little chicks, and they all seem to be a little different. My littlest one is almost grey with white spots on her wings that just appeared. Another is very dark and has a black chest unlike the others. The last one is much bigger and quick developing. Regardless of those differences they are mainly black with barred feathers coming in. They are all supposed to be the same age at about 2 to 2.5 weeks. Are they different breeds? I got them from my local farm/pet store just like my last batch of chicks.

Alright. That’s a sure bummer! I haven’t seen any waddle or comb pinkness yet. I was concerned with their barring in their wing as it came in. Two of them have very dark legs. I’ll watch a bit more till they’re 4 weeks and then I’ll have a 100% on their age. They were sexed and supposed to be female.

How I was able to tell your barred rocks were males was the white dot on each of their heads because barred rocks are auto sex breeds (which means they are a breed that can be sexed as a young chick by how they look.)

I was looking at their spots to determine gender, and the only one with the most deformed spot was my very light colored one. He’s been a cockerel suspect for a few days now. No tail too, light leg wash. I’m sure I’ll have a cockerel with this bunch, but I’ve never gotten a rooster before from the place I’ve always got chicks from!

Don´t worry there are many kinds of barred chicks - in size and colour (i.e black;grey;orange...)
