These two are about 6-7 weeks old. Are they hens or roos? One has a shorter tail and bigger comb - calling "him" Gilbert. However their barring looks the same. "Gertrude" has a teeny comb.

Thanks!!

I think you are right with the naming... Fairly certain the one in the front is male. Since they are mixed and basically the same color- that makes it difficult. I'd have to go with the one in back being a girl, based on the comb and feathering... A nice pair!

PotterWatch, I looked up sex-links - it's hard to find a photo of an adult sex-link male, but they did look like the male chicks. I read that the male sex-links will have light necks though. Can you refer me to a photo of an adult male sex-link?

Thanks!
Melissa

You can see some pictures of BSL males on feathersite: http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/CGP/Sex-links/BRKSexLink.html . Their coloring can vary quite a bit as far as how much white they have. If yours are mixed breed, the barring isn't a reliable way to tell gender. I would guess that you have two cockerals there but it's possible that the one with the smaller comb is a pullet. I would give it a few more weeks and see what they look like then.

Thanks for the link I have 2 black star sex link and was worried one might be a he but after looking she is just at that ugly stage and is a pullet so Thanks, am not sure on the 2 pictured chicks, I have to BR and one has a short tail and the other a long, they might both be girls do you know what breeds she was mixing to make them?

I just recently hatched some eggs from my Black Pene roo and my BR hens and guess what? They are sex-links! All the barred are roos and had a white spot on their head at hatching. Of course I didn't do it on purpose but after it happened I figured it out. So if the roo was a black, they ARE black sex-linked males. Of course it helps if you know who the roo was like I did. I got rid of the roo shortly after I started the incubation. Too bad.

Ms Ellen, that is what happened to me! Although those COULD be sex-links, my sex-linked roo looks more, I dunno, blurry. By now, my sex-link had already a little green in his tail and little saddle and hackle feathers....... My guess, just BR pullets, and one with a large comb!
