Hi,

So, when I brought my 7 year old to pick out two Polish hens, he fell in love with a 'mystery chick'. Try as I might, I have had little success in figuring out it's breed. (GREEN) I was hoping you all could help me out?

Here's the likely list:
Barred Rock (most likely?)
Dominique
Cuckoo Marans (less likely)
Barred Longhorn (because s-he's got the weird white earlobe and huge thighs, usually stands very upright)

Also, we're fairly certain it's a roo- has a funny voice, likes to kick, usually first to the 'scene'.

One concern- this bird (Myst) is 3 weeks old (for sure- We've had him/her since June 1st). Myst has only matured enough to have half his/her wing feathers, a few shoulder feathers, and NO tail feathers. All the other birds (orps, ee, polish) that are the same age are nearly fully feathered, flying, have combs started, and 2xs the size.

Here are a few photos:

Myst at a few days old. Was a mottled black/grey; lighter at butt and yellowish smudged at top of head. Note white dot at earlobe. Beak and Feet were mottled also.

Myst at 2 weeks- note the big orpy butt to the left- they're the same age-3 days. Didn't get a pic of Myst standing, but usually looks all thigh/leg.

Myst-3 weeks old. Where's his/her tail feathers?? Note- beak and feet are now almost all orange. No comb yet? Also- is the boney chicken wing top supposed to be so pointy and bald? Didn't notice this with any of the other hens.

Myst-3 weeks: aerial view- that's all there are for feather growth.

Myst 3 weeks: Still has the white ''earlobe'; no comb yet- all the others have them

Myst 3 weeks: is that a start of a comb?

Final Myst Pic: Feet have gone almost all orange

Thank you! Would you mind posting how you each came to the breed conclusion? I'm new and trying to get an eye for how to differentiate breeds. Through reading posts I'm guessing that comb, feet, and feather coloring is a big part of determining a breed?

I'll post more pics this weekend. The past two days he's had a feather explosion! He's going to be an attractive bird and so far has a comical personality- like a mischevious and rough-n-tumble 6 year old. I'm really hoping he'll turn out to be a good roo. My son loves him. We've changed his name to Mister E. Not all that original, I know....LOL But it was cute coming from a 7 yr old.

Barred Rock ~ they have single combs and yellow legs with even barring
Dominique ~ they have rose combs (which your chick has) yellow legs and uneven barring (cuckoo pattern)
Cuckoo Marans ~ they have single combs white/pink legs and the uneven barring
Barred Longhorn ~ they have single combs and yellow legs

cockerel because the barring thats already coming in is bright in color and pullets tend to be more dull. the wash down the front of the legs is light compaired to all the slate washes i have seen on pullets
