Hi-
My name is Bill Phelps and I am considering my first coop in the spring. I hope to learn about how many birds I should have and what type. So far I am leaning towards the Golden Comets. I plan to build/buy the coop this winter and get everything in place for spring. I am planning a B&B when I retire (4 years, 28 days) and want to get the egg production going early.
I have a unique location as I live on a narrow pennisula of land at Nolin Lake. Great views and fairly safe from large preditors (although I do have raccoons & owls).
One concern is how my dogs will adjust to the chickens. My older lab won't be an issue. I saw her one day with a Guinea Hen perched on her and picking at her fur. The younger lab may take some training.

Did you check out the Coops section here for ideas yet? A suggestion I'll make there is to use hardware cloth for the raccoons. Those things will get in anywhere! But the members here say the hardware cloth is great for keeping them out of your coop. In the Breeds section you'll find all the common breeds listed and you can narrow down your search by picking requirements such as good egg layers, cold hardy, non-broody etc. Very handy! Leghorns I know are fantastic egg layers, but they are not the friendliest creatures (mine doesn't like me

But they lay well! LOL)
I can't give you advice for the dog training as I don't have one and haven't trained one around chickens yet, but I think you'll find some good tips in this thread:
