I am about to set some coturnix quail eggs in a Genesis 1588 with auto-turner. Is there any reason I should not cut a piece of rubber shelf liner to fit over the wire floor and put it in before I set the eggs? I think that would be one less thing to do when I remove the egg trays at lockdown and, therefore, minimize the amount of time the lid is off. Not a lot of time, I realize, but the liner will also bring the temp down a bit until the incubator warms up the liner, so I think I have to count that time also. I am concerned about the effect on temp, humidity and fumes off the liner.

Thanks,

UGCM

Putting a liner in there now shouldn't affect the temperature that much. The 1588's adjust very quickly. I don't know about fumes, though I have heard that some of them can produce noxious fumes that kill the chicks. I personally don't use liners at all, and have rarely had chicks get their legs stuck in the wire.

I used a homebuilt bator without the shelf liner until lockdown I did LD at day 14 I really did,nt see that much temp differance. That was the first hatch the hatch I am doing right now I started with the shelf liner in place after I turn the eggs and close the bator back up it seems to recover ever so slightly slower almost not noticeable HTH good luck with your hatch
