I am new to chickens. We bought 12 hens 3 wks. ago and this past Sat. bought a 5 month old Buff Orp. roo. The problem is that the hens are being very hard on him. I mean he has to hide in the tall grass, etc. We make him sleep in dog carrier at night with it in the coop. Will it take forever for him to become the ROOSTER. His Dad is a big, big boy but our roo may never recover his self esteem. Any suggestions?

He needs to grow up a lot, 5 months is pretty young for a roo. Give him time, he'll figure it out. And for now, the hens see him as an invading chicken, not a roo.

Just FYI, it's recommended to to do a minimum 30 day quarantine when bringing in a new bird.

He is a fairly young guy to be put in with Adult hens. They can be extremely mean. Give him a couple more months and he'll show them who is boss
