Does anyone know of a battery hen rescue group in northwest indiana? I did some reading up onnthe sunject and id really like to adopt a few hens and rehab them into normal chickens. I just recently started a small flock of birds with store bought chicks, but id much rather rescue if i could, every animal iv had has been a rescue except for my chickens i have now, any info would greatly be appreciated!

There aren't any true battery hen rescues in the middle of the country- there are smaller rescues though, as 17 chickens stated that take in farm animals! :( I believe there is one or two on each coast.

A lot of times egg farmers will post their hens on sites like Craigslist when they are about to cull their current group and put in new hens. They won't refer to them as battery hens but you can kind of get an idea from the pictures, price and wording used. Unless they use fake pictures like the ones I fell for :lau

I got my first ten ex battery hens as a surprise...the ad I responded to showed beautiful birds free ranging in lush grass...showed up to a high production egg farm. All the hens had been partially (some fully) debeaked and were in awful shape. I of course took them anyway and they were and are the sweetest girls :love

I would suggest trying to find an "Egg producer" in your area and contact them directly.
I got 12 battery hens this past summer from a local hutterite egg producer. It took them no time to start walking and only a few days to start acting like chickens. They're still producing daily. Most of them actually managed to grow their feathers back.
