Battery hens?

I've never heard of anyone in the U.S. getting these poor birds from the big egg producers (except a few folks who find them after they have fallen off a truck). But in my area there are several producers that are small scale, compared to the giant producers. They sell them off after a couple of years in production. I bet they would sell you a "spent" layer that would lay well enough for a back yard flock.

I'm not in your area but you could try calling your local feed stores that sell in bulk and see if any of their customers fit the bill. In my area there are a couple that advertise eggs on Craigslist, but most sell eggs wholesale to restaurants so you wouldn't hear about them.

I have Hens from the guys over here..... Perhaps if you mail them they can give you a lead ?

I hope this helps.

Here in upstate NY, there are a few livestock rescue "farms" around... I bet there are some in PA, too. I know ours have taken in battery hens, you might try googling livestock sancuary or livestock rescue and contact them. If no luck, PM me and I will get you the contact info for my "local" livestock rescue places, you can see if they have info on anyone in your area. Might try your local cooperative extension and/or 4H, too.
