Battle of the Waterers....

Wow, thanks for all of the ideas!!! The bucket idea sounds like something we might try since we have plenty of buckets with lids we could use. I hadnt even thought of using a fish tank waterer... that seems easy enough to just add when I suspect we may get freezing temps that night.

No dirt/dust/poop/shavings/bugs in the bucket/nipple waterer.

I really do love that system!

I saw a very nice 1 gallon hanging waterer at TSC. It is the kind that has the saucer that locks on to the water container. It is simple and ready to use. I hang mine from a chain at the height of the chickens back. They do get a little sand in it, but that just rinses out when you replace the water daily.

In the summertime, I use the standard plastic and/or galvanized waterers up on blocks to reduce dirt and litter in the water trough. In the winter, I use those black rubber shallow bucket/feeder from the feed store up on blocks, I just turn them over to stomp out the ice if needed and refill. (I don't have electricity or water run to the Coop)

There are aquarium heaters on the market that shut off when the water levels drop and they do not explode. I use three of them. Have tested them myself.
