Hi

My name is Riaan I live in South Africa and I have started with button quails 3 months ago. I also incubate the quails eggs in a bought incubator and my success hatch rate is 80% but I battle to raise the little chicks to the point where I can put them from the brooder to the aviary for example I had to 2 chicks that was almost fully feathered which I then moved from the brooder to the aviary which died no this is not the first time before I tried just switching of the infra-red light to make the use of the natural temperature and still they died so no I ask please if anyone can give me advice on how to solve this problem I would appreciate it at the utmost since I would have been sitting on 15 button quails instead of 2.

Okay let me see if I can help. The chicks in the brooder temperature should be:
Week 1 hatch to day 7: 90-95 F (32.2-35 C) then lower to,
Week 2: 85-90 F (29.4-32.2 C)
Week 3 and 4: 80-85 F (26.6-29.4 C)
Week 5 and 6: 75-80 F (21.1-26.6 C)
Adults like it a bit warm as well although I dont think you will have too much cold in South Africa!
at that time the chicks will have the adult feathers and be able to control their own body temp. If they get to cold before 4 weeks they will die rather quickly as they can not adjust their own body temp and must be kept warmer. Also be sure you are feeding them a high protein food and have fresh clean water being sure to keep rocks or marbles in the water so the chicks cannot fall in and drown or get wet and chilled. Hope this helps. Good Luck!
