BBS Orps - how do you know which ones to cull?

If you like him I wouldn't cull him.

Yes, there are more perfect roosters that have 5 pointed combs and dark eyes but it all comes down to what you are breeding for? Do you want top show roosters or sweet backyard chickens that make you smile and feel warm inside?

Emmalynn my roo looks almost identical to yours. The only difference is that Jonathan (named after one of the ship captains on the Deadliest Catch) has more frostbite on his comb and wattles. Poor guy.

I would breed him to a short legged hen. He looks a little long in the leg. If your girl has a nice tight U shape and no white underfeathers...you will get beautiful babies.

Here is one of my hens. No white underfeathers. She was only a few months old in this picture. They came from Meyer hatchery. Pretty good for straight run hatchery chicks?

Here is what I suggest if you really want to beef up your buff orpingtons. Hatchery chicks will never compare to breeder chicks.

Contact Jody (hincjc - the mod) and get a dozen of their buff eggs. They hatch out robust and with gorgeous color!

Just remeber eye color is different according to the color of the Orp. The buff ones have light eyes, sort of golden. The dark birds such as BBS should have dark eyes
