I like the colored hackle feathers too. I am thinking of getting some BCMs and trying to work the hens into having the colored hackle feathers. Most of the hens I have seen so not have a lot of color. Maybe I'm weird?
The standard asks for color, I much prefer color, however it isn't easy to get without getting too much copper in the males. . . I'm working on getting more color in my girls, as honestly if I wanted Black Marans I'd get Black Marans
I also really like the copper on my Marans. Looks pretty on the black. I do also have pure blue Marans without copper. They are also nice. The lady who bred them had to cull lots of roosters to get the copper out of them. Great breed of birds in my opinion, they have a great demeanor. And the eggs are BEAUTIFUL!
The BCM girls are supposed to have the copper hackles, which is sometimes easier said than done. If you have very little to no copper, you are dealing with the over melanized birds, due to the mahogany gene. Same problem going on here, so don't feel alone! Go to this site to see the proposed SOP for the breed. While they have been suggested for approval as a breed with the APA, it's still not official yet.
