beach sand dirt bath

I use the construction sand because I was told that the play sand was created by crushing larger pieces of rock and had pieces that were so small they would damage the quail's lungs, similar to how the diatomaceous earth can do. I don't know if it's true or not, but haven't had any issues with the construction sand so that's what I use.

I have big circular pans with about 2 inch sides and the quail go nuts dust bathing when I give them fresh sand. It lasts a few days before they have thrown too much out to dust bathe more.

The "construction" sand is fines from rock crushing. It's used as underlay for patio bricks and such since the sharp edges compact better and lock together. "Play" sand is normally from sand quarries and will have naturally weathered edges. To check the difference compact with a flat object. If it's crushed rock sand it will have decent resistance if you push a finger in. Natural sand will"give" like dry beach sand.
