Beach sand for the run?

plants seem to like it "as-is"... but for chickens I think I will clean it.

i'm speaking from a complete place of ignorance here, but i have heard several people here say that beach sand isn't a great idea because the individual grains are round and when the chickens eat it (as they will), it can impact in their crops. i have absolutely no idea if this is true or not, though.
