Our Jenny got ahold of a fishing lure and as a result she almost cut the tip of her beak off. It cut across from one side almost to the other. We cleaned it up with rubbing alcohol and Crazy Glued it. It's a bit crooked but still attached.

The Tom wanted to peck at it as it bled so I held her till it seemed to stop. We put them both into their pen to keep her quiet, to keep her from pecking around the yard. I wish I could put her in alone so he won't mess with her, but she fusses at the wire mesh sides if he's not with her which would most likely tear the damaged piece off.

I tried to do a search on beak injuries such as this one and couldn't find anything. Can anyone tell me if she will be ok, if the beak will heal itself? Can turkeys bleed out from this type of injury?

Thanks,
p.

Beaks are like fingernails.. they will grow back.. slowly but it will grow back for sure. If it comes off again.. I wouldnt worry as long as she can eat and drink.

Not sure how long it will take to grow back tho..might take a while.

They debeak birds in factory settings all the time (which I disagree with anyhow, if they weren't so crowded there would be no need).

Hopefully it stops bleeding soon, but even if it doesn't grow back, she'll adapt.

Thank you for all the replies. The point of her beak did fall off, only it wasn't a clean break straight across. She now has a fang protruding on one side, hence her name changing from Pinky to the obvious...Fang.

She seems to be eating fine, but we are keeping a good eye on her, as well as keeping her feed dish full (deep) during feeding times.

Hopefully the fang will wear down and not present a problem with preening her feathers. I'm wondering if strong nail clippers might help with taking the edge off of the sharp point without causing any further bleeding.

I'll try to get a photo up soon, if my camera will allow me to focus that close up.
