Bear proof chicken tractor ideas?

As others have said nothing practical is bear proof but I think something bear resistant will make them move on to something easier. I think heavy wire mesh panels would be sufficient. Something with a grid no bigger than 2 inches and 8 or 6 gauge wire. You would have to order it by the sheet from a metal supply company and it would be cheaper than a concrete bunker but much more than an average coop.

We had a bear prowl around a couple of weeks ago. It was most interested in the food (sunflower seeds) and carried off a half full 13 gal galvanized trashcan of it. And then it came back and lounged on our driveway. It didn't show interest in the coop or the chickens themselves, the seeds were outside the run/coop.

But I got anxious anyway and I bought the premier 1 42" high electronet and a very powerful energizer. It's not so much the netting that has to be strong, but the generated current has to be at least 6000 volts. Mine checked out when I had everything surrounded by it at 8000 with an occasional jolt to 9000. Don't skimp on the energizer. From googling the issue, while the bear was prancing on the driveway, I concluded that nothing short of a shock would deter bears unless you would build a concrete bunker with 12" thick walls and no windows.

If you want something portable, electronet is the way to go. If you can make it permanent (like a permanent perimeter fencing, it would be cheaper to go with 4 or 6 strands of wire and wooden posts, and the same strong energizer. We live on a mountain, so many rocks. I didn't quite fancy digging fence posts.

Thanks, I'll look into the electronet. I've never had to purchase one so I didn't know what I was looking for as far as brands. I really don't want to fence in my whole yard and like you I don't want to be digging fence posts! I haven't seen a bear yet this year but I know they are out there and I really don't want to be giving them a free meal. A friend of mine lost a bunch of chickens to a bear and she ended up having to shoot it because it wouldn't scare away and she feared for the new foal she had.

They will rip these apart while taking a nap. If they can bend the door frame of a car to get to a candy bar, any welded mesh wire would be like a carton box. I honestly do not think you can build for bear resistant other than concrete. But you can deter them by shocking them - a fence that bites. That will get their attention.
