A bear checked out my birds today. Luckily, my Ring cameras went off and I was able to turn on the microphone and scare it away. I’m assuming it will return.

I I’ll likely order an electric fence tonight. Any recommendations on one or other ideas to deal with this?

Hi there! That bear looks pretty scary. We have had some around here and had one attack back in October. An electric fence is in the workings for us. We haven't tried this yet, but I heard that if you put pb &j or honey in tin foil on the fence, the bear will come and try to eat it, but will get stung and will know not to come by, like it will be too hard to get if there is pain involved. Hopefully this helps! Best to your flock.

Electric fencing as an addition to a secure tight coop and run is the best of protection! I currently am not using it but have in the past when I had a need to! Bears are very rare here but determined dogs, raccoons, mountain lions, coyotes and bobcats have been a threat in the past. I still have a very good wide impedance fence charger and insulators, etc. ready to plug in. Baiting an electric fence with scent caps or similar attraction devices will insure the animal gets a charge to their sensitive nose before they just bull on through! Multiple guard dogs allowed to roam the coop area help me a lot with predators but are no good insurance against attack when they are not present. The predators usually case the joint before they attack and that way the dogs may help, being often present. Lap dogs are more like bait here. I once witnessed a redtail hawk fly off with a woman's chihuahua in her front yard! Screaming didn't help.
