Bear

My sister in CA used to feed the birds but the bears kept coming and killing the birds. She had two little kids to worry about so she took in the bird feeders. Never mind having to worry about the mountain lions!

Hmpf. I love bears. I love seeing bears in the "wild", doing their cute little bear thing. I do not however love the bear in my backyard. We have a big boy that likes to destroy bird feeders and lurk around my coop. It is easy to love wildlife when they are far away and serene, not so easy when they are in your backyard. We have taken all of the precautions (garbage, feeders gone etc), but if I catch the thing in my yard, I cant say that I wouldnt shoot it. I have small kids, so my gut instinct is to kill the thing, but I wouldnt enjoy it. Hopefully ours both go away on their own...

I also live in NH, and YES, bears do love chicken. They will eat them if they can catch them. Been there, done that. I say, get rid of everything he can smell (that smells like food) and keep all grain bins in the house. Keep an eye out, while you are outside. We had one last month that would charge me and my dog. Be careful......

The species of bear makes a big difference. You are almost certainly talking about a brown bear (grizzly), while Oblio's little guy is a black bear. They act very differently.

Actually a brown bear and black bear are the same really. A grizzly is a completely different species. We have "black" bears that are cinnamon, light brown, and black in color. Griz are brown/black with a very different head and neck shape. IF that was a griz cub around your house, you run for the house and call the police, because if the cub is there the mama Griz is there and she is deadly! I would also call and warn your neighbors immediately. I love bears but greatly respect them.

That is a great photo!! I've only seen a wild bear once....a grizzly... fresh out of its den batting away with his paws searching for food. We needed binoculars to see him well, thankfully because he looked HUNGRY!! (BTw, this was in Alaska in Denali Park~~not here in South Carolina.

It was a long way to go to see that bear, and you have one in your own backyard!!

"Your bear" looks so "cute!" but I would try to get rid him, too, especially if I had small children.

Cute! I've watched documentaries where they shoot the bears in the butt with rubber bullets and act all crazy towards them to scare them away. Seems to work. Maybe worth a try?? I've never had a problem with bears in my yard...meaning I've never seen them, but I would have a problem if there was a bear in my yard!
