I hate to disagree with Pips and Peeps of all people
but some of my first year pullets are molting, and they are 9 months old. There is a "mini-molt" that can happen at this time, not like the full blown molt of the older hens. The key is to look for the spiny new feathers coming in. I would also quit with the "messy foods"--there are lots of treats you can give them! Be creative!
