Beau's Cloud Nine Cochins journey

Blue has always been my favorite color in chickens. I'd had Blue Orpingtons, Blue Ameraucanas, Blue Plymouth Rocks and of course, the Blue Partridge Brahmas. And one tiny little blue Cochin goofball whose sire is actually a Buff Cochin and mother a splash. I do like lavender, too, though. Have had one lavender bantam Cochin hen. Such a beautiful bunch of colors!

Iris's parents were one of my Buff bantam Cochin roosters and one of the splash hens. The one you correctly identified as splash with buff is the daughter of the blue hen, Iris, and a splash Cochin rooster. Iris contributed her blue gene as they always do, and the splash rooster contributed his, so Phoebe appears splash (almost mottled) until you realize she has some buff feathers. Of course, splash is just a bird with two blue genes which washes its plumage out. So, the Buff Cochin rooster is her grandsire, Iris's sire. Chicken genetics can be wild sometimes.

yeah even if if a hen has a buff parent but doesnt show it she can still be a carrier of the buff

yea i think chocolate genes are really interesting if you dont know
its a sex linked trait. so a black rooster over a chocolate hen produces cholate hens and black roosters
but a cholate rooster over a black hen produces black hens and chocolate roosters.

ofc if you breed 2 chocs together that cancels out the sex link

I never really learned chocolate genetics. I know mostly blue/black/spalsh, lavender, barred and partridge because those were what I've had. I have never been able to learn the gene designations for chicken genetics, though. Always looked like alphabet soup to me, LOL. Best of luck with your project!
