Always had laying hens in a coop, but recently got interested in exotics. When I was young I had a polish and a silkie as pets and wanted my daughter to have some of those experiences. Also, wanted her to enjoy raising chicks and all that comes with an active coop. So, to our laying hens we added another coop and got some silkies and some day old chicks from a local breeder and we are off. I have so much to learn!! We aren't supposed to have roosters but one of our silkie chicks is a roo! Not sure what we are going to do yet. Since we hand raised them we are pretty attached and he is super sweet. We also have a mixed ranch chick that was given to my daughter. She raised her in the house (thank the powers that be it turned out to be a she!) and we now have a house chicken! The silkie chicks we got at first ended up being satins, and we have added 2 showgirls (one of which is broody and sitting on eggs) and two frizzles. So, we have so much going on and my education and understanding of having chickens is limited to our laying hens and what I learned from my dad when I was growing up. I am hoping to learn what I need to have chickens not just as farm animals but as pets as well.
