One or more of the following ingredients work for dust baths:
fine dirt
sand
peat moss
plain wood ash
DE, added to other base ingredient(s)
I wouldn't use just DE, just add a little to your base ingredients(s). Otherwise, too much gets in the air and the chickens will be breathing a lot of it every day, because it's so fine it will make a cloud that lingers.
Some people add pesticide dust in their dust baths, but I never use it. I've had good control without it and then I don't get pesticide residue in my eggs.
