Kind of a side question, what simple effective ways can you apply DE? I'm thinking plastic gloves (and a mask) and throwing small handfuls into the coop might not work well because the DE wouldn't be evenly distributed. Can I apply it with a feather duster?
Also, does DE work on cockroaches? Our neighborhood has roaches in the sewer that come up to the ground surface at night. My parents have been using liquid chemical spray around the floor corners of the house (exterior) and that has been successful for killing the roaches. My major concern right now is that my chickens are in the backyard most of the time and I worry that they might eat one of the dead poisoned roaches and my chickens may be poisoned as well as a result (I haven't witnessed seeing or eating any from what I know).
If DE kills cockroaches I may be able to convince my parents that we use DE instead of the insecticide sprays. Otherwise if DE doesn't work, I'll have to figure out a way to keep my girls away from those dead buggers.
