The chicks are now 24 days old and, one hour ago, one of the chicks started breathing very heavily. About ten minutes ago, I took it out and it started seizing. It died 5 minutes ago. It does not seem that, with these symptoms, it could be maraks or coccidiosis. Does anyone have an idea of what could be the cause of death?

Update: The 2/11 survivors are both males and about to go outside. They are 10 weeks old and CROWing!!! They have been taking trips outside for two weeks now and love it. They also love to play fight.

Oh, to answer the question in your title post ... we also kept our chicks in plastic bins at first. We used puppy pee pads and pine chips. Easy clean up.

That confirms that it is an environmental toxin killing them-- I guess that is good and bad
