I use straw in winter and pine shavings in the warmer weather. I like the smell of the straw better but it is harder to clean up, in winter i think it insulates better just wondering what others think.

Linoleum? You have your chickens in the Kitchen?!?!?!?

I use course sand in the run - which is covered to keep it dry. Its very easy to rake over and sweep off feathers and dry poop from the top. Also the chickens love scratching about in it and it looks tidy and bits don't blow around the garden.

In the coop I have a mesh floor for the birds to walk on, and the poop falls through onto dry earth. No smell and I shovel it out every few weeks to make fertilizer for the garden - adding extra soil back under the coop.

I like teh shavings but they are more expensive. I use straw, leaves and pine branches cut up and tossed in. I use pine shavings for the brooders and sometimes in the nesting boxes but I like straw int eh nesting boxes better because it seems to be more cushioning.

Thank you for your input, I think i am going to put sand in my run this spring. I hear a lotof good stuff about it outside.
