Bedding question

I have 6 girls, a coop in the middle of a dog cage 10x10, whats the best bedding for outside the coop it gets muddy all the grass is now gone,i use straw inside the coop.

I've heard that using the deep litter method outside works, meaning piling in things like grass clippings, straw and other organic things (as in plant matter, not as in organic food) to provide a soft layer of material that the chickens can dig through. You could try replanting also.
You could even try some sand to assist drainage.
