Hello,

I would appreciate some advice. We are into our third year of having a backyard flock. Our first flock consisted of 12 layers. We are now looking forward to 10 broilers and 5 layers in late April early May, however I have some concerns about the bedding I should use for the broilers as I understand they get fat and lazy and do not move around a lot. I do not want sick dirty chickens so would appreciate your comments on what you have had success with. Much appreciated.

Hi, welcome to the forum, glad you joined.

This has been discussed in the "Meat Bird" section of this forum. Some people raise their Cornish X with their regular flock but a lot keep them separately. There are always different ways to go about these things. Some get their Cornish X to forage for some of their food and roam quite a bit, some find that theirs just lay around eating, pooping, drinking, pooping, eating, pooping, sort of an endless cycle. Some of that depends on what your facilities look like and some on your management techniques. You might want to start a thread in the meat bird section to tap into that experience.

Cornish X poop so much I don't think it matters what bedding you use, I think it comes down to cleaning regularly and maybe getting them to roam a bit during the daytime.
