It depends on how old they are. If they are chicks then you could place wood shavings. If they are full grown then you could make a roost, and place hay in the nest boxes.

A compressed bale/bag of pine shavings only cost about $4 at Tractor Supply (a little goes a long way).
That's the best.
You can also use straw or hay; whatever you have laying around.
In the fall you can use raked leaves.
My first choice is the pine shavings because it is very absorbent and smells good.
