Bedding

I will be getting my first chickens shortly and im just curious if barley would be a good bedding if not what would

It depends on how old they are. If they are chicks then you could place wood shavings. If they are full grown then you could make a roost, and place hay in the nest boxes.

A compressed bale/bag of pine shavings only cost about $4 at Tractor Supply (a little goes a long way).
That's the best.
You can also use straw or hay; whatever you have laying around.
In the fall you can use raked leaves.
My first choice is the pine shavings because it is very absorbent and smells good.
