By wood chips do you mean sawdust or large pieces of wood cutting?

Ours prefer either hay or sawdust...

I really don't know what they prefer, but IMO what bedding you select is dictated by what is available and your climate. I'm in GA and have sand in coop, nests and run..Mine ate everything else I tried. And the sand is quite easy sift to clean.
