I just got my honey bees on Saturday. They're italians. This will be my first year bee keeping. My parents did it several years ago. So I had all the equipment, suits, etc. If everything goes good, i'd like to get another hive next spring.
We just got our bees last week. They're Italian, too. We set up two hives this past Tuesday. We were so fortunate that we have two good friends who keep bees. So they came over and helped us get everything set up. So far, so good.
My boyfriend has two hives at his house in the lower state of SC. He's had them for a couple years now and his honey has a mild sweet, but not overly sweet taste. If you've ever tasted sourwood honey then you would know what his taste like. He said they had a hive swarm the other day but luckily they gathered in the pear tree and he was able to cut the tree branch and get them back to the hive. I believe he gets about 20 pints of honey from each hive when they gather it. I wish you luck with yours. We need more healthy bees around.
I checked on the hive this morning and removed the empty queen cage. They look good. I'll probably have to put some more sugar syrup out for them tomorrow or Thursday. Wish it would warm up a bit so they can start buzzing around.
Thanks, I been in my hive twice so far & they are really getting busy. My queen is marked so she is easy to spot. I love your hives! My DD wants to paint the next one like a bee!
I just got my bees today - my first time with bees. Made a couple mistakes (didn't think ahead about where to put the smoker), but I got them in the hive just fine.
