So the coop was built the house bought and my 5 lovely ladies all moved in. Had done my research spent hours on here reading up on their needs and felt confident. Day 2 I got my first egg so I was over joyed. However during week 2 I was clearing the table scraps of what I thought were suitable for my ladies and in the bowl went the smallest piece of chocolate cake you ever saw...... this proved to be a near fatal mistake!!
The next morning I take their corn up and I am not greeted in the usual excited way. 2 of my ladies aka "The Divas" are sat in the grass eyes closed and swaying with poop flying out faster than my eyes could register! What had I done wrong....... CHOCOLATE CAKE!!!!!! The next few days I walked miles up and down the garden checking them. No table scraps at all was just putting corn down and still they wouldn't eat or drink. Gone was the friendly welcome for me they were all so quiet. However after about 4 days one of them perked up and was drinking and doing some light scratching and around day 7 the other one was seen doing the same. Now they love me again and are waiting at the gate for me every morning. I feel so lucky because I never thought I would get attached to hens!!! However since this happened there have been no eggs. The weather here in Belgium has been very up and down and 3 of them (which are a year old...rescue chicks) seem to be moulting a little including "The Divas" the other 2 are only around 24 weeks old but I do know both of these have laid because I had smaller eggs. Just hope the 5 of them have not conspired against me never to lay again to punish me for poisoning them. Now I double check everything before feeding them.
