HI there chicken-people!

I've not been around in what seems like a decade! As most of you know, I'm the one that worked at a local company. Sad to say, they let me go without so much as a "bon voyage"!
Back at the end of June I got a killer job offer and jumped at it. However after some serious thought about the drive time, the wear and tear on my vehicle and so on and so forth, I decided against it. The money I'd make would'nt amount to much after all the driving that I'd have to do. So I had to retract my resignation at the company - WHICH I might add was done so with honesty and sincerity. My supervisor told me he understood and was fine with the retraction and glad I wanted to stay on board. So, then my vacation came up and I left for a week, only to come home to a voice message stating "that my resignation was accepted and I'm not to return to work..." what the heck??? So I called. And called. And called. To which none of my calls were returned. So I just went in. They told me that there was no retraction and they took my resignation seriously and that's that. Whatever happened to someones word? Is there no honor these days??? I just broke down and cried and tried to remind them that I was a good employee. That I showed up for work, that I treated ALL my customers with respect and cheerfulness. They acted like they (my supervisor and the owner of the company) didn't even know me. I told them it was a matter of principle, that a promise was renigged (gosh I hope I spelled that right). All I was told is that my time there was over, and that they didn't want me leaving there that day thinking they screwed me. Beg your pardon? THEY DID SCREW ME! I was honest about the job, upfront about my loyalty to the company, forward about my reasons for wanting to stay on there.... I'm still reeling from this. I guess I just needed to vent... now off to play with my chickens...

You really shouldn't give notice unless you are prepared to leave your job. The time to weigh the factors is BEFORE you accept one position and resign another. You can't retract a resignation. They did not screw you. What if they had hired someone to replace you after you resigned? Should they now tell that person that you changed you mind and now they can't have the job?

I am sorry this happened to you but it's not the company's fault.

hunh..... I see... well, I think it is. It's family owned. I've babysat, I've been to their sons weddings, I've went thru a death with them... it's family. Wow. I don't think I like it here anymore...

Dawn,
Don't feel that one person's response is a reason to leave. We all get negative comments, risk of posting. I understand you feeling betrayed but hopefully this is just leaving you open for something better. CHIN UP!!

It's too bad that happened. They shouldn't have told you that you could have the job back if they didn't mean it. It sounds like you went back to work for them for a while and then went on vacation, and they dropped the bomb while you were gone. Maybe they were offended that you had looked for another job and decided to teach you a lesson. It stinks.

I can totally understand why you'd be upset. They accepted your retraction and said welcome back... I think they were pretty sneaky the way they went about firing you. You're right, you were up front and honest with them, and they didn't have to accept your retraction, but they did. For them to turn around and say there never was a retraction is just low... they probably did it so that it looks like you've quit and they can put that on your ROE so you can't collect EI. They may have had other reasons while you were away to fire you, and your resignation was the perfect excuse to do it and not take responsibility. Perhaps they received a resume from someone willing to make less pay than you were making. Employers are sneaky that way and operate to benefit themselves only. I've been through the whole "we care about our employees" song and dance enough times and gotten stepped on myself to know that it is just a big load.

I'm sorry. It sucks.

But, I don't blame your former employer. You tendered your resignation. It would seem someone higher up on the administrative food chain decided not to accept your un-resignation. I agree; the right thing would have been to advise you of that before you returned to work. But, you're not that loyal of an employee if you resigned in order to take a job elsewhere.

I agree with the dont resign till you mean it comment, Look at it from the employers side, if you were ready to leave then decided it would be too much wear on your car what happens when a better offer appears closer to home, you will be jumping at the new job, and since you have already shown you hand(to leave for a better job) they choose to go ahead and let you go since they would have to train someone to replace you at your conveinience instead of thiers. This way they will not be left scrambling to replace you when the time is right for you. Plus if you have been there a while they can save on salary and benefits too.
