for about the past 2 weeks or so, I've been hearing one very consistant sound, first heard it when it was right at the edge of our woods.

my first thought was a whip-poor-will, because it sounds like it's saying "whip-poor-will!" really fast over and over, it sounds like a bird, but I don't know really fast, plus I've always heard that whip-poor-wills have a veeeery long song.

the second I heard every once in a while, I think it's an owl but I've never heard one that actually goes "WHOO!", the voice sounds like a man almost.

was just curious if anyone else has heard these and knows what kinda of birds/animals they are.

they're much different than the fox barks and coyotes I'm used to .

Hmmm. I dont know. I would look at known animals first, but this is a crazy old world...I have seen enough and dont listen much anymore when someone tries to tell me certain things arent out there.Riiiiiiight.
I know what you are talking about with the "owl" though. My son was out late one night at my families place getting the mail, first he heard and owl then something that sounded like a man imitate the owl back.
LOL, who knows, maybe a mutated owl or one with bad vocal cords.

Whip-poor-will is quick in my opinion. "WHIP-poorwill, "WHIP-poorwill, WHIP-poorwill" I've always heard them in 3 quick bursts

Owls are a bit harder.

"Whooo! Whooo! Whoo!"--Barn Owl, sometimes sounding like a mouring dove call soft and low

"Whooot! Who! Who! Whoooooo!! Barred Owl

"Whoot! Whoot! Whooo Whooo! Great Horned.

If it sounds like someone is dying out in the woods, it's a screach owl, lol
