I have been gathering all sorts of information from your site and finally got around to joining. Seems to be a lot of very helpful information here.

I grew up on a 5 acre hobby farm in the Willamette Valley in Oregon. We mainly raised rabbits and chickens, but had goats, geese, a sheep, and an array of other animals. I currently live on the central Oregon coast which poses it's own farming issues. I have three children and in these uncertain times I am doing what I can to provide for them no matter what may happen. That includes producing our own food. Luckily our current place, while only 1/3 acre, is zoned RR, allowing us to have small farm animals. I breed meat rabbits and am currently building our chicken coop. I will be getting some good layers I hope. Have not settled on a breed yet. The kids want silkies, but I am not so sure. Either way we hope to have our coop down and chickens here pretty soon.

My end goal is to have a few acres and raise my rabbits and chickens, along with some milk goats, maybe sheep and a huge garden.

Silkies are great for kids and for brooding but, I wouldn't count on them for eggs.

My 9 year old daughter thinks they look like little abominable snow men :) That is her main reason for wanting them. We live in a national forest in a community cut in under the trees. I am thinking perhaps something a little more aggressive toward predators, like americaunas. I CAN have roosters here and I remember my mom's amaericauna roosters keeping just about everything out of the coop except people. My chickens will have a completely enclosed coop and run to keep them as safe as possible. Have not had issues with my rabbits drawing predators yet and we have been here a year. They are much closer to the house than the coop will be.

Hello and welcome .... so glad you joined BYC

I love silkies. They are hilarious for pets but I agree with diva, they are not too reliable with eggs :) Good luck to you

We ended up getting 5 Easter Eggers. They are 7 weeks old. I hope they grow up to be one rooster and 4 hens so I don't have to find any new homes. The kids think they are the best new pets, until they poo on them of course. I find it funny that they scream and squirm when a baby chicken messes on their laps, but don't bat an eye at grabbing a new born puppy covered in goo and rubbing it with their bare hands until it starts breathing.
