Hello all!
I'm still relatively new to chickens, a little over a year now. What started as a desire to have our own eggs, has turned into an obsession with hatching and raising various breeds, and i love them all so much! So far I have learned so much that I've become somewhat of a "guru" to my other farm friends and most of the info I've gotten has come from the threads in these forums! I figured it was about time for me to become a member so I can stop lurking in the shadows and become an active participant!
I currently have about 39 chickens, plus 10 Ayam Cemani's and 6 more Serama's in the my incubators. I've become obsessed with rare and heritage breed chickens (mainly small and bantam breeds) and have a bucket list of breeds i want to hatch and breed in the future.
I started off with 5 Silkie's and then branched off to a variety of bantams. I have old English game birds, golden seabrights, seramas, Tolbunt polish, cochin, mille fluer d'uccles, etc. I have one random Golden comet who thinks she's a little bird like the rest. She follows me around like a puppy and always needs attention! I have hatched 10 of my own silkie eggs and my silkie hen just hatched 3 of her own from her first clutch sitting. In total, I have hatched 26 eggs, out of 28 that I have incubated. Pretty good hatch rate if I do say so myself!
My favorite aspects of having backyard chickens is really the start to finish and then starting again. I love collecting the eggs that my girls lay, setting them in the bator, hatching them and doing it all over again. My birds all have their own personalities and they are just so fun to enjoy.
I used to shoot competition 3D archery and was the VT state womens Open class champ 2 years in a row. After some chronic injuries worsened, i was unable to keep shooting, so i turned to farm animals as a hobby. Ive been raising mini Nigerians for 5 years and now I've branched off to chickens.
We are a Dr. Doolittle family, animals abound! We have dogs, cats, chinchillas, goats, chickens, you name it and its probably been in our family at some point!
We were a family of three humans for 8 years, then decided to take on Foster care. We had a couple kiddos come to us, before finding a child that needed us, just as much as we needed her. We are in the process of adopting (held up by COVID of course), but she has been with us for nearly 2 years now and will be a part of our family forever!
I found BYC just by searching info about my birds one day. Ever since then, every time I have a question, I aim for the BYC forums for the answers. Seems there are so many people on here with different attributes, opinions and knowledge, i always feel like I get a very well rounded answer. There is no "one way" to hatch and raise birds, but collectively, there are happy mediums and I always seem to find that medium here. It just felt like it was time to be apart of the community, rather than just sitting on the outside looking in.
Nice to meet you all and I look forward to contributing as needed!!
