I have been offered a 5 year-old India Blue peacock and his pen. The farmer who has him has been gradually selling off his chickens, guineas and peafowl. This is his last remaining bird. He looks in good health, but he is missing a swatch of feathers under his neck. I couldn't get my hands on him, but the skin looks fine, not red or scaly. I can't see where he would have rubbed those feathers off. Ideas anyone? Suggestions of what to look for? We are probably going to take him; the farmer is giving us a 12' x 12' chain-link pen that my hubs plans to roof over. I live in coastal Georgia, and our winters are pretty mild. When we go to move him, i plan on giving him a thorough checkup, dusting with DE or poultry dust for lice/mites, and worming him with Safeguard, or would Ivermectin be better? After he's used to our farm, about 3 months in his pen, we plan to free range him during the day and feed him in his pen at night. I have a flock of 20 chickens & 2 guineas he would range with. Any one see holes in my plan?

I'm going to ask the farmer if I can go daily to feed him until we get ready for him. I hope to tame him down a bit. There are no other birds, animals or people at the property his pen is on. He's got to be pretty stressed.

Sometimes they will pace the fence of their pen, this can eventually rub/break off feathers on the front of the neck. I have several with bald spots on the throat. Plan sounds very good to me, I would worm with Safeguard.
