Beetles in Stock (Mealworms mid October)

Quote:
You will find that different worms will pupate at different times and sizes. Some smaller worms will pupate and result in smaller pupae and thus smaller beetles. I think I read somewhere that dryer warmer conditions will induce pupation. The stress of shipping could have caused some worms to prematurely pupate. I wouldn't worry about it, though. Once your mealworms settle into their new home, you'll be getting tons of pupae! I pick out the small pupae and feed them to my chickens. They love all phases of the lifecycle (i.e. worms, pupae, beetles).

Oh my stars. Mine are going bezerko. Just keep pupating and turning into beetles. That is so cool to see them change colors.

I'm trying to understand this, and to be honest, can't believe I would even consider this. Anyway, what do you do with the flying beetles? I watched a good UTube video but the fellow didn't really say. Also, where do you all keep them in the winter. In your house!!! Can't even imagine if those things got out.

Just wait till hubby hear's this. First I want a sandbox for my chickens to take a bath in, now I want to raise these worms for them to snack on.

Thanks,
Sandy

From what I understand - the beetles/mealworms don't fly and can't crawl out of slippery straight sides (like the sides of a tupperware/plastic container. If it were a wood container, they'd be able to grip it and climb out. A lot of people use tupperware/sterilite containers and they do just fine - as long as they are at least an inch below the top, they can't get out - so you don't even need to have a lid. The lid is more for people's peace of mind and to keep other critters from getting in. Sterilite sell 3, 4, 5 drawer systems and a lot of people use those to separate out the different stages. I'm keeping my mealworm farm in my "cat room" and they're doing fine. My SO was against having worms in the house, but I told him to just not look...just like how he never looks to see if the litter box needs to be cleaned out.

EDIT: Some sources say that the adult beetles can't fly and use a drawer system (no lids) - other sources say they CAN fly. I don't know...to be safe, use a lid since that will help keep other critters out.

If you have access go to you tube and type in mealworms there are a few vids on there to help with some questions, and a few pointers. I keep mine out in the barn so i use sweater boxes with lids and screens hot melt glued to the top to keep critters out. The drawer type are good also but dont have a real way of keeping out critters. I'd say great for indoor use. If you want pics let me know. I'm a newby to the worms myself but will help any way i can. Randy

I mailed several orders today. (Check your PM's if you have confirmed orders.) One more order to fill, and that will be it until next month. I already have lots of little mealies coming on, a little ahead of schedule, so check back mid-to-late October, and I'll be offering them again. In the meanwhile, if anyone needs any supplies, like wheat bran or bins, let me know.

Thanks for all the orders and helping me figure out what to do with all my extra mealworms!

jjthink, I got your worms in the mail today. I'm officially out now. I still have my pupae reserves, so I can send out Beetle Starter Sets. PM me if you're interested.

Also, if you're interested in the crop of mealworms that will be becoming available in a few weeks, PM me, and I can put you on my waiting list.
