Yesterday, I gave my pullets some beets. Today, I have been finding some poops that range in color from a rich red to a dark burgundy. I hope that this can simply be attributed to the beets they ate yesterday evening. Any ideas?

That's what I'm thinkin'!

Feeding beets to chickens and other livestock was common 100 years ago. My experience is that the chickens enjoy having them cooked, especially. And, mine eat lots from the garden at this time of year.

Purple poop? Feed some carrots and the others beets . . . green lawns are so boring

I was feeding lots of tomatoes and their poo was rust colored..I took away the tomatoes for a several days and their poo was back to normal.... So, I would think the beet would change the poo as well.

Until more modern grain harvesting equipment was available, beets were the main livestock feed in many parts of the world

mine are fond of turnips, eggplant, potatos broccoli and any kind of green you can throw at them. they like tomatoes as well but not the green ones as much but they still munch them. one that bewilders them is an overripe banana. they nibble have this puzzled look nibble more look puzzled more nibble and it goes on for a good 20 minutes but they eat it peel and all. only thing ive had no luck feeding them are pea hulls (moistened of course but they half heartedly scratch thru them) and onions. i dont blame them there though raw onions make me gag too

Other people have had problems feeding their chicks bananas, too much potassium is the guess. Be careful

Beets affect me the same way. That's probably too much information isn't it?
