Before I pinch his little head off is this normal

IMO, I would not let the dog be put in the position to have to protect you, just yet.
I've had a few agressive one and I have a real nice one now who bit me on the inside of my ankle.
This was my fault for running with treats, with my back turned , I didn't think he would be that fast.

One of my best investment's is a $1.00 butterfly net. Catch your roo and trap him tho the ground. Then either pick him, once you are in control or leave him there, trapped. Use a bucket to save the netting.

He will soon learn YOU are the boss.
I would pen him seperate from the pullets. They are not breeding yet, he is just being a cocky bully.
I have a 18 week cockerel that has been in solitary for over a week now. He is just too mean to the pullets and they are terrified of him. But, he is more terrified of me, now.

This a good idea Brendapa. I do have a big fishing net with handle. Boy is he going to be mad. I agree with you about the dog, but being the breed she is ,she feels this is her herd and I am just the commander:lol:

I would not worry about your dog getting the taste for chicken, as a few years back my dog attacked and killed 2 of my chickens, I was distraught, after a while
I realised I was the problem, as I would panic each time the dog got out while the chickens were about, he gathered it was the chickens I was paniced about so was
protecting me... one day I thought enough was enough so I took him in the garden with me and stayed calm, each time he looked at a chicken I told him calmly to leave, and since that day he has not even attempted to touch a chicken.....I trust him 100% with them now,

And about your cockerel, its hard to say if he will get better, it may be because he is young and a little in-experienced.... my parents had to get rid of thei cockerel as he nearly killed one of their hens doing this, thank god after some TLC she pulled through, we think he just took an instant dislike to her, as it was her he was only rough with... or maybe she just did not do as she was told, as she was a little skitish.

Hope things get better for your hens, and he becomes a gent

I dont allow mean animals at my house.. Especially if they hurting my hens.. I say pinch away...

Heck, remind me never to have a RIR !

I had a Light Sussex roo (Sid) who was great with everything female, but hated males of any species.....attacked the dog, goat, and my husband....hence he became dinner for the dog (We're veggy).

Since Sid I have only had Brahma boys and they are delightful....huge, well mannered, and never cause problems to people. (An electrician who recently came to do work at our house spotted one of the boys strutting up to the door for treats and he

nearly fainted.....saying....'Look at the size of that'......much reassurance later and he was able to bring himself to touch the roo). So yes, Brahmas, lovely roos, you can keep several without a problem!

GREAT ADVICE! PERFECT.
You need to handle him, right now. Leave the dog out of it. If you cannot handle him, cull or rehome him. Seriously, you will be happier in this hobby if you can move freely among your flock.

I have a spek sussex roo that started doind this. He is almost twice the size as my EE's and was grabbing them by the neck. He never came after me but I figured at this rate (he is 12 weeks) it would be coming soon. I watched him while weeding in the garden and when he went for a hen I was on him like a pak of dogs on a 3 legged cat. lol. I made him sleep by himself in another section of the coop that nite. I guess he got the ideer cause he leaves the hens alone now.

he is trying to breed them, how ever if he is attacking people I would get rid of him as it is very hard to stop, and if you break them from going after you, they will go after any one, and little kids seem to be high on their list. We tried every thing with our Sussex and a Buff Orpington, but they wouldn't stop. I have an EE that is real sweet and has never gone after any one. If you would like one of his offspring I have a couple of 7 week olds that are from him and I know at least 2 are roosters, also have a 3 1/2 month old Lakenvelder very pretty that needs a home.A bit shy so he stays away from people.I live in Mi. if you come this way
