beginer breeds

I am looking into adding chickens to my inventory of birds. I have pheasant quail and pigeons so I know some of he basics on raising birds but I wanted to start of with a more "beginner" type chicken...any ideas? I live in iowa and the weather here is fairly crazy in all seasons.

First go to the Chicken Breeds forum and study breeds, genetics, showing. Decide what you are going for: eggs, meat, dual purpose, 'pretty', a combination of all the above? Ask questions. Go to the Iowa state thread in the Social Forum - 'Where am I? Where are you!" and ask your neighbors locale related questions. With your background knowledge, you will have no problem transitioning to keeping chickens.
