What I have done is landscape around the coop to sort of camoflauge everything. Hedges help with muffling some noise. I also have some small wind chimes and bird feeders around so that maybe some of the general bird chatter will mask sounds as well. Maybe try some lavender or gardenias (sp?) as hedges/odor control. Keep everything really clean and offer fresh eggs occasionally.
I have noticed that since getting my chickens that several of the neighbors have taken the plunge as well. Maybe you'll start a trend in your neighborhood as well.

Best wishes and enjoy your girls!

(You may also offer free/low cost compost to any gardening neighbors, too)

Welcome!

In your position I'd probably go to TSC and buy their minimum of 6, unless there's a breeder close to you (info is on here for some of them.) The trick, I agree, will be to raise them together for compatibility. You may get an unwanted roo and you may lose one, so this way you're covered.

The egg song has been the only loud time, and I love hearing it! They might also make noise if they suspect a flying predator.

Maybe it is just me,but I was just thinking the other day as I watched them walk and peck that they are just like having any other *pet*. I mean really they are just doing their thing, and I think people make a fuss because they are considered *farm animals* only.

They are way quieter than all my neighbors dogs.Dogs that are left to bark for a good 15 minutes+ at times. The egg song doesn't last that long!

A roo is your only issue. We had one last year, and no one even noticed him.He started crowing when he was like 8 or 10 weeks old. I was so sad that he died at 16 weeks. I might get another, and if he is a problem I will keep him in the house. I have had 2 sick hens in the house,so I think I could put a roo up in the house(in a cage ofcourse). But again I just don't see it as a huge problem compared to all the other noises.

It is more of a mental thing with people that chickens don't belong in backyards.Hopefully each of us are changing this one flock at a time!

Consider a line of bamboo to block neighbors and noise. I grow 15 foot corn to do the same.
