I'm trying to figure out if its possible to have a multi colored flock while still breeding your own chicks, and having some idea of the results. I was thinking a wild type roo would give the mother's color, since most color genes seem to be dominant, and then buying a new one every couple years, so half the offspring would be wildtype and half the mothers' color. I'm sure that's too simple, but any idea which colors would work under that system (favorites are mahogany, buff, barred black, columbian white)? Also, are there any breeds that include a wildtype coloration, and which would those be? Thanks.

well first off, what breed are you plannin on gettin? That would dictate somewhat the colors you have to work with...

by wild type, I assume you are talking about duckwing and crow wing style birds, 75% or better of them come in those.

You can make any color in the world you want with just a few starter birds, just takes time and record keeping, and no you dont have to be scared of out crossing, everything in the world of birds was made that way, just depends on how bad you want to make a new color and how dedicated you are, usually a 4-8 year process.

being new to this I would suggest going here first

plug in the various colors you are interested in and this will clearly show you what to expect the out come to be. You can then breed them back to a parent, or each other and see what the next generation will be, so on and so on

Really is much easier to learn with it right there in front you in picture form than it is for some one on here to start throwing a bunch of confussing genetic terms at you when you are new to it....sounds and looks like Chinesse...LOL
